After spending four long days scouring the halls of the LVCC looking for new and exciting products for our customers theres a wide array of fantastic things that grabbed our attention.
Sony F65
If there was a product to be singled out as the Star of NAB it would probably be the forthcoming Sony F65 camera which has a 20MegaPixel CMOS sensor and can output to 4K and 2K resolution. Sample footage shown was simply sublime and completely underlines my opinion that Id take 4K over 3D every day of the week. The F65 is unfortunately about 12 months away from delivery. Sony asked me what I thought it would cost and when I mentioned an Alexa-beating price they said nothing and smiled, so my best guess is that this will be the Sony camera to compete with RED and Alexa at last... &nbspBring it on!
3D
Talking of 3D, there was a lot of that about too, however 3D was not the primary focus of the show as it was last year. Manufacturers have clearly cottoned on to the fact that 3D has its place but that place is not mainstream production until 3D-glasses-free screens are matured and in abundant use amongst consumers. That said, JVC and Sony both showed off some excellent 3D palm corders for release this autumn and they were so good that Id probably buy one just for the novelty factor....
Sony OLED monitors
2011 is set to be the year of the OLED monitor, with Sony expanding their range from the incredible 7.4 PVM-740 with a range of displays that include 17 and 25 models. Sony describe these as drop dead gorgeous and all I can add is that if you are even remotely interested in high-grade video monitoring these new OLEDs are an absolute must-have. They deliver the best images I have ever seen from a monitor.
Introducing the e-LCDVF from LCDVF
In terms of camera monitoring there were LCD viewfinders on display from Cineroid and many others. &nbspCineroid have developed an enhanced range of metal-clad viewfinders to compliment their popular EVF-4L (which to date remains the only model to actually be shipping). Its been a very frustrating wait for Zacuto and Redrock Micro to bring their EVFs to market and in searching for a decent alternative I came across an exciting new EVF from an Estonian &nbspcompany called LCDVF. I met with their CEO Tonis Liivamagi who apart from sporting the most impressive moustache of NAB 2011 is a great guy who ran me through the features their EVF which he says will be shipping in May. The prototype I saw was a far better design than any other EVF. What LCDVF have done is produce a model that looks very similar to the viewfinder on a Sony PMW-EX3, with a similar integrated twist mount that allows simple rotation of the viewfinder. The LCD itself is a 3 model with the same resolution as a Zacuto EVF, hence the tighter dot-pitch provides a far less pixelated image with no loss of resolution. When it comes to LCD EVFs this is the one to watch - Literally!
Panasonic WiFi Logger dongle &amp software
I was whisked into a technology demonstration suite to see Panasonics impressive new WiFi logging system for the superb AJ-HPX3100 P2 camcorder. In a nutshell a WiFi server module is installed into the camcorder and this allows users to establish a peer to peer network with any WiFi equopped laptop. Theres no software to install on the laptop as the application is web based and served from the camera... Users can then browse any recorded clip, play them, read, edit and add meta data. Its a powerful system that will doubtless be a godsend to any PA...
Sound Devices PIX 240
Sound Devices are a company normally associated with guess what? &nbspYes, Sound Devices! However, at the show they showed off their new PIX240 DDR which features Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD recording to a robust caddy-mounted SSD. It has HDMI and HD-SDI inputs and integrated LCD with easy menu navigation, all housed in a very smart and robust housing. At the moment theres no 50Mb/s or lower data rates for recording, but Id say this looks like it will become the external recorder of choice...
K-Tek
K-Tek manufacture a really lovely range of boom poles, windshields, microphone mounts and other useful accessories including a fabulous low cost alloy boom pole that well be selling for around &pound65. &nbspIn terms of build quality and useability is simply blows away the popular Rode boompole... Were going to import and distribute their entire range of products. Thanks Brenda!
The elusive Birger Canon EF to Micro 4/3 lens mount
I spent some time with Erik Widding from Birger Engineering. On their stand they were showing a working prototype EF to Micro 4/3 mount as well as an EF to Sony E mount for the new Sony NEX-FS100 nxcam. This will undoubtedly be a great and very popular product but unfortunately we have been subjected to repeated and embarrassing delays when it comes to actual delivery of the product... Lets hope Birger get their act together before these cameras are obsolete! If youre waiting for delivery of your Birger mount we thank you for your patience - The delay is not our fault, Honestly, we were promised stock for January and will deliver as soon as we can... Sorry.
HyperDeck Shuttle
Blackmagic Design are well known for innovative low cost capture / output and conversion products. At NAB 2011 they launched their new portable and rack-mount HyperDeck Shuttle DDRs which offer uncompressed HD recording onto SSDs at an incredibly low price... &nbspExpect the portable version to be under &pound300!
Sony NEX-FS100
Lets not beat around the bush. This little beauty is for those who want Super-35mm DoF but cant afford the PMW-F3... &nbspIt features the same sensor in a compact chassis with flip-up LCD on the top. Visually its more like a portable VTR with a lens stuck on it than a camcorder, however it is aimed fairly and squarely at the HD DSLR market where it should prove very popular thanks to almost infinitely superior video and audio performance. Id have my FS100 along with a LCDVFe and that lovely Sound Devices PIX 240 mounted on a Kinomatik Movietube CR quick-smart though!
Thunderbolt
This is the word that was creating a stir in the south hall - Thunderbolt is the new faster (Up to 10Gb/s bi-directional bandwidth) method of connectivity for external devices.&nbsp
Avid Media Composer &amp ISIS 5000
Avid didnt introduce any new products but they have announced a $995 cross-grade to Media Composer 5.5 from Apple Final Cut Pro. Anyone who knows anything about broadcast grade editing systems know that Avid set the standard and this offer should encourage FCP users to switch. A new lower cost 16TB version of the ISIS 5000 shared storage solution was also announced too. Avid is more affordable than ever.
Sony HXR-NX70E
When a manufacturer tells you that their camera is shower and dust-proof you imagine that it could perhaps cope with getting caught out in a brief downpour or a mild sandstorm... &nbspWell on their stand the NX70 was left working under a shower head for the entire show. &nbspOh, almost forgot to mention that the pictures are great too! I was impressed and have no doubt that its going to be one very popular camcorder.

Apple Final Cut Pro X announced

As widely expected Apple have used their NAB 2011 Super-Meet to announce Final Cut Pro X and took time to offer a brief run-down on the features and changes their latest version will offer to the post-production community.&nbsp

Apple state that FCP X is completely rebuilt from the ground up with an new interface, a new toolset and offers a new approach to video editing and post-production. Noteable features include background rendering, auto image stabilisation on import, Magnetic Timeline for controlling sync and Compound Clips for managing (nesting) multiple clips into a sequence. The new interface of Final Cut Pro X is similar to the recently announced iMove 11 and differs hugely from the familiar two-up FCP we know.&nbsp

Importantly, Final Cut Pro X is now fully 64-bit and will support Grand Central Dispatch in OS X, meaning it can now truely utilise multi-core processing and RAM allocations beyond 4GB. Final Cut Pro X is due for release in June and CVP will bring you more details when available.

Sony F65 4K resolution CineAlta SR Memory camera announced

At NAB 2011 Sony are demonstrating their next-generation CineAlta camera, the F65.
F65 Features:

Industrys first 8K 20M-Pixel CMOS imager for digital motion picture production
From this imager, the F65 will derive brilliant HD, 2K, True 4K resolution, and higher
16bit Linear RAW output
F65 adheres to 1.9:1 aspect ratio, DCI Projection standard (4096 x 2160 or 2048 x 1080) Choice of picture composition as needed: 1.85:1, 1.78:1, 1.66:1, 1.33:1, 2.35 spherical, 1.3x anamorphic, or 2x anamorphic cropped
Wide dynamic range, low S/N ratio, and high sensitivity
Optional SR-R4 on board SRMemory recorder
HD-SDI Monitoring outputs with viewing LUTs
The camera can shoot 1 to 120 fps
16 bit-RAW recording in SRMemory&trade card (sold sep.)

&nbsp
F65 Imager
The F65 imager contains a total of 20 Mega-pixels. Half are sensitive to GREEN, and the other half are equally shared by RED and BLUE pixels. The sensor will provide pristine super-sampled HD and 2K images, and this is the first sensor in the industry that provides a dedicated green photosite for each pixel in the 4K (4096 x 2160) output image. The green channel is the most significant in creating the Y (or Luminance) signal. Having twice the amount of GREEN photosites compared with traditional 4K Bayer pattern sensors provides a significant improvement in image resolution.
SRMemory Card
The SRMemory card is an ultra high-speed, high-capacity, and high-reliability flash memory media for SRMASTER&trade series cameras, ideal for demanding professional applications including 3D production, high frame rate digital cinematorgraphy, and high-resolution digital cinematography.
IIF ACES
With its significantly wider color space, Dynamic Range and other processing, the F65 is the first image capture system designed from the ground up to support the Academy IIF-ACES, Image Interchange Framework, Academy Color Encoding Specification.

We had a hands-on preview of the FS100 in February but were not allowed to disclose anything - Until today... &nbsp
Whilst the superb sensor is the main reason people will buy the FS100, here are the other notable features of the camera:

We really like is the versatile 3.5inch high resolution LCD viewfinder panel which can be manipulated into almost any position and enhanced using the supplied extension eyepiece when using handheld, thus negating the need for a 3rd party EVF.
The camera offers excellent light sensitivity with an ISO rating wed estimate at 600-800 at 0dB gain. The lack of a beam splitting prism means that the camera delivers images free from internally generated chromatic abberations associated with 3-sensor camcorders.
It can record full HD resolution at a class-leading 50p. 50p shooting is the future, as it combines the smoothness of 50i with the higher resolution and image quality of progressive scan. Higher resolution + Higher Frame Rates = (usually) Better.
Variable fraame rate recording (slow &amp quick motion) which can be easily accessed directly via button / thumbwheel on the left hand panel .
Records onto eithe Memory Stick Pro Duo or SDHC / SDXC cards.
The E18-200 lens optical image stabilisation is very impressive, allowing surprisingly steady handheld shots to be achieved even on the long end of the zoom.
4:2:2 output through a full size HDMI connector allows connectivity to external recorders / monitors etc... (theres no HD-SDI output)
Dual XLR audio inputs as standard (although they are mounted on different panels!)
Manufacturers like Vocas and MTF are already working on PL mount adaptors so that operators can use high quality cine lenses such as Zeiss CP.2 compact primes on the FS100.
Sony LA-EA1 adapter allows use of low cost, high performance Sony Alpha 35mm SLR lenses on the NEX-FS100E
De-mountable handgrip, top handle and external microphone (all supplied).
Uses standard NP-F type batteries
NEX-FS100E - EU version supplied without lens
NEX-FS100EK - EU version supplied with Sony E18-200mm zoom lens&nbsp

It is rumoured that a super wide angle 11-16mm zoom lens with PL mount, an aperture of T3 and a price tag of around &pound5,000 will be released shortly after NAB. We expect this lens to be manual zoom only.
Later in the year (wed guess just after IBC in September) we understand that an F mount ENG style 10x (or possibly even 14x) servo zoom lens of 18-180mm (or 18-252mm) will arrive, allowing the F3 to make use of its handgrip mounted zoom roocker and paving the way for its use as a&nbspdigital film camera for serious documentary and corporate use.
Please note that this information is tentative and therefore the exact specification of le production lenses is subject to change.

sales@creativevideo.co.uk (Dr. Ivam B. Personally, I think that FCP is one of Apples core flagship applications which serves to ensure Apple is engrained in the lives of the professional video community, helping to define everything apple as aspirational. From a marketing standpoint alone Apple would be crazy to ditch Final Cut Pro!
Over the last few days the rumour-mongers have suddenly changed their tune, as news has trickled out that Apple have in fact been very busy working on FCP behind the scenes and are set to launch a revamped Final Cut Pro 8 over the next few months.
We understand that the new version is a major overhaul of core code, with FCP8 becoming a full 64-bit application and featuring a completely redesigned user interface. Were told that the new vversion represents the biggest leap forward since the introduction of FCP over 10 years ago.
With bold ststements like that being banded around we expect FCP8 to deliver a quantum leap forward in terms of performance and productivity.

Panasonics E-Series P2 cards offer fast transfer speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, substantially faster than most professional solid-state memory cards offered by other manufacturers. &nbspAll P2 cards use high-quality solid-state memory, extremely durable, die-cast aluminium construction and impact-proof connectors. This is in direct contrast to other solid-state memory card products, which often feature breakable, plastic casing with less reliable connectors. Additionally, P2 cards offer dependable performance during recording in all types of environments, as well as instant access and complete data compatibility in all P2 camcorders and workflow tools.
Panasonic P2 solid-state memory cards ensure highly reliable, video, audio, and metadata recording, especially in challenging conditions of extreme temperature range, shock, and vibration. P2 cards allow professional users to benefit from a fast, easy, file-based workflow and exceptional reliability, and work in all current P2 products.&nbsp

Apple Announces New MacBook Pro Range

Apple have refreshed the available MacBook Pro range with all new Intel Sandy Bridge Quad-Core i5 and i7 processors, AMD Radeon HD graphics and the new ThunderBolt expansion port. The new CPU options were widely expected and part of Apples continuous upgrade of their hardware - but Thunderbolt is something altogether different and is the beginning of a new era for advanced system expansion.&nbsp

ThunderBolt (from Intel, developed as LightPeak) is an expansion port for external devices with dual-channel 10Gbps data transfer per port. As its based around existing and common DisplayPort interface its a simple Plug And Play connection for RAID storage, HD video displays or multiple devices daisy-chained with a single cable for data and power.&nbsp

Data transfer rates for backup and editing are 12x greater than FW800 and twice as fast as emerging USB 3.0 technology - by Intels reckoning that means you could transfer a complete HD movie in 30secs! Promise and LaCie have announced their first RAID boxes are due soon, and we expect a range of ThunderBolt adapters and card readers for tapeless formats in due course.

Matrox Vetura Capture enables MXO2 users to quickly and easily capture QuickTime files using popular codecs installed on their editing systems. Users of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 can capture to the Matrox MPEG I-frame full raster (1920 x 1080) HD codec or other supported codecs. Final Cut Pro users can capture to ProRes and, as promised at IBC 2010, Avid Media Composer 5 users can capture directly to DNxHD .mov files.

This means Avid users can capture from analogue and SDI sources directly to Avid DNxHD codec on any MXO2 family product and import to Media Composer bins via Avid AMA link - an MXO2 Mini could then be used for real-time video preview output direct from the timeline. Matrox Vetura Capture therefore is another essential piece of kit for budget conscious Avid Editors - broadening the options available from Matrox.

Matrox MXO v2.1 also includes real-time WYSIWYG playback support for Encore previews and After Effect RAM previews and a new HDMI 3D viewing mode option that automatically switches your HDMI 3D TV viewing mode to the specified signal type (side by side or over/under).

MXO2 Mini and MXO2 LE have been two of the most popular editing products of 2010, and things are getting better for 2011!

Sony have today announced that they are to manufacture a new low cost camcorder incorporating a super-35mm&nbspCMOS image sensor (apparently not the same sensor thats&nbspin the forthcoming PMW-F3).&nbsp&nbsp

The product has not been named, so for the sake of this article well call it the HXR-NX35 because its effectively an HXR-NX5E with an s35 sensor and removable lens.

The pictures weve been given are also&nbspunlikely to be representative of how the product will actually look - Thankfully!

Heres what we do know:Its an NXCAM product, recording AVCHD at up to 24Mb/s onto SDHC / MS mediaIt records 2 channel uncompressed audioIt features removable lenses and is likely to be supplied with a Sony / Minolta manufactured zoom lens as standard. It will be compatible with PL mount lenses by using a third party adaptor (eg. MTF)It will have uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 output through either HDMI or HD-SDI (or perhaps both) allowing the use of higher quality recording through a third party device. It will cost arount €6,000Wed expect this to ship Spring / Summer 2011
