Perfect for users who need the flexibility to work in a range of field-based situations, the XF105 and XF100 fit into a new palm-sized category within Canon’s XF family. Their compact design and advanced image quality makes them ideal for operators who may routinely switch between a variety of projects, such as weddings, corporate videos or documentaries. With their unrivalled range of features, including a new Infrared mode and 3D Shooting Assist functions, plus easy-to-carry form factor, each provides the ability to move between assignments with one versatile camcorder. Stunning new OLED field monitorA quick look at the new Sony PVM-740 is all it takes for you to realise this is the new standard for field monitoring, thanks to its stunning OLED screen.&nbsp Shown side-by-side against both a CRT and a LMD-9050 it iss clear to see that the PVM-740 delivered far superior resolution and contrast ratio to both, making it a must-have item for anyone who needs accurate monitoring on location.&nbsp Set to be sensibly priced at under &pound3,000 this will be a big seller.
LEDelight! It’s now very clear that ‘the writing is on the wall’ for traditional incandescent fixtures, as there now some simply stunning LED offerings.&nbsp Here’s our pick of the best:&nbsp 1) Gekko Karesslite:&nbsp A beautifully engineered LED softlight that’s a genuine substitute for a Kino-Flo Diva 400 with the added benefit of much increased robustness, lower power consumption and almost infinite lamp longevity.&nbsp 2) LitePanels Sola:&nbsp these are the first high output LED Fresnel spotlights that are truly viable for studio and location use.&nbsp The SolaENG camera-top / sun-gun consumes only 28w, is 10-20v DC powered and has the output of a 250W tungsten lamp!&nbsp It also has excellent beam angle ‘zoom’ and is fully dimmable.&nbsp At around &pound500+VAT it is one of those ‘must-have’ pieces of kit.&nbsp Available from around June.&nbsp The Sola6 and Sola12 are mains powered studio Fresnel LED’s, offering the equivalent of 650w and 2KW output with excellent beam control and full dimming.&nbsp&nbsp All SOLA lams are daylight colour temperature.
This Glass is Class:&nbsp Zeiss MK2 Compact Prime and Zoom lensesIn response to the uptake of DSLR shooting, Zeiss have cleverly updated their range to incorporate an inter-changeable lens mount with Canon EF, Nikon A and PL options, giving users true versatility and future-proofing.&nbsp These lenses are simply essential tools for anyone serious about shooting video on a DSLR as they provide full manual control and dependable calibration markings with up to 300degree focus ring rotation between MOD (minimum object Distance) and Infinity.
3D disappointmentPanasonic were demonstrating what I can only hope is a very early prototype of their forthcoming 3D camcorder, as the live on-screen results were truly awful.&nbsp Sony also showed several 3D acquisition products, again only serving to underwhelm.&nbsp What is clear to me is that the creation of good 3D content requires very careful shot-by-shot set-up in order to deliver anything other than mediocre results.&nbsp For me, even Avatar (which I thought was a fantastic movie) didn’t need to be 3D, as whilst there were some shots that stunned in 3D, others looked like cardboard cut-outs…&nbsp I was frequently removing the 3D glassed in order to I’d rather watch 4K than HD in 3D
Arri AlexaArri were demonstrating their new Alexa digital 35mm camcorder (which starts at around &pound70,000 excluding lenses).&nbsp It’s a great looking camera, robustly designed to deliver easy migration to digital acquisition for film DoPs who are switching from 35mm. As you’d expect, it has excellent camera specifications.&nbsp Alexa records ARRIRAW or Apple ProRes files onto SxS Pro media.&nbsp Deliveries are set to start in May 2010.
Canon’s&nbsp Crackers!Canon’s long awaited entry into the tapeless market is here at last in the form of their new XF300 and XF305 camcorders.&nbsp Both feature full HD 1/3” CMOS sensors, a superb HD-L series 18x lens and use a 4:2:2 long-GOP codec at 50Mb/s for class-leading image quality.&nbsp Interestingly, 50Mb/s is the data-rate required by the BBC and Canon are clearly hoping that the XF will be approved by the BBC for mainstream acquisition.&nbsp The XF’s Recording media is Compact Flash (type 1) and there are 2 slots.&nbsp At 50MB/s you’ll get 160 minutes record time with 2x32GB cards installed.&nbsp The XF chassis looks like a cross between an XH-A1 and an XL-H1.&nbsp The XF305 is identical to the 300 other than having TC in / Out, Gen-lock and HD-SDI connectivity.
Sony expand XDCAM HD optical disc range.Just as we think Sony have forgotten optical disc media and are pushing all their resources into solid state product development they announce a few brilliant new products for 2011.&nbsp Firstly a 4 laser mechanism for ultra-fast read / write which will be incorporated into future XDCAM HD products, coupled with a new low cost 128GB write once disc that’s perfect for archiving etc…&nbsp Better still is their innovative XDS ‘XDCAM Station’ which contains EX card slots, an optical drive and HDD storage.&nbsp It enables users to back-up to any format and also allows data-rate conversion etc…&nbsp It is fully networkable and provides multi-seat NAS for FCP!

In addition, ALEXA can simultaneously record a compressed format and the higher resolution ARRIRAW 2K file, allowing users to rapidly edit in the field and later use the higher quality footage for subsequent on-line mastering.&nbsp ARRI also promises a host of expansion accessories for the camera, from storage modules and advanced recorders, to viewfinders and an inter-changeable lens mount so you can use your DSLR lenses in addition to PL-mount film lenses.

CVP rescues GearBox

CVP (Creative Video Productions Limited), the purchasers of Mitcorp (UK) Ltd in January 2008 have acquired all assets and trading names of&nbsp GearBox (sound and vision) Ltd (In Administration) in order to operate the business as a going concern.&nbsp GearBox’ founder Richard Eastwood has been retained as General Manager of the new operation, reporting to Mark Forth, Managing Director.&nbsp All staff and regional offices have been retained.&nbsp Service to GearBox clients is uninterrupted.“This acquisition enables GearBox to significantly improve the product range and service quality provided to customers whilst delivering several strategic benefits to our enlarged group” commented Phil Baxter, CEO of CVP “GearBox now has the financial stability, improved infrastructure, increased range of equipment and in-house engineering capability that will not only ensure its’ survival but provide an excellent platform for growth – The future is bright for GearBox.”GearBox was established in 1997 and provides specialist broadcast audio and video equipment rental from its offices in Soho, West London, Cardiff and Leeds.&nbsp At its Park Royal HQ, GearBox also provides high quality ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ hire production suites in the form of its ‘White Rooms’.&nbsp In addition, its’ lavishly appointed Cream Recording Studio facilities provide a spectacular World-class environment for the highest standard of music recording and mixing – from chart-topping bands to producers of feature film soundtracks. (These transmitters should also be available separately).2) There are TVs which dont require glasses for viewing instead they incorporate minute cylindrical lenses known as lenticules over every pixel of the display.&nbsp These lenticules are optimised to allow vision of adjacent pixels to left and right eyes only*. A quad-HD resolution display can therefore display full HD resolution to left and right eyes, however there is a limitation with this kind of display: *The viewing angle is very critical in order to see the image in 3D and there are only a limited number of sweet spots where this is possible. In other words, if you have one of these displays your viewing position will be defined by the TV, not you and the odds are that if you are in a sweet spot watching glorious 3D then the person next to you will be watching 2D as they are not in a sweet spot...&nbsp Suddenly the active shutter spectacles become more appealing to me!The big question is will viewers be prepared to invest their hard-earned cash and wear headgear in order to experience 3D at home? Now I am a home cinema and PS3 enthusiast that relishes watching movies and games on a big screen with full surround sound and Id probably love the full 3D experience in that context, however I just cant imagine bothering to put specs on to watch every-day television... Frankly Id rather have great quality HD content in 2D for the majority of the time with 3D reserved for occasional special interest programmes, games and important sporting events...

sales@creativevideo.co.uk (Dr. Ivan B. The SDXC specification, developed by the SD Association leapfrogs memory card interface speeds while retaining the world-leading SD interface. SDXC is also the first memory card specification to provide 2TB storage without hindering the high-speed performance necessary for high-end photography and HD video recording. The SDXC specification uses Microsofts exFAT file system to support its large capacity and interoperability in a broad range of PCs, consumer electronics and mobile phones. The exFAT system was designed for increased compatibility with flash media, from portability of data to interoperability with multiple platforms and devices on removable media.

sales@creativevideo.co.uk (Dr. Ivan B. The BBC also specified an additional aim of making the install process in Kabul as quick as possible. The CVP-Mitcorp team thus completely built and tested the studio in the UK, before disassembling it ready for shipment by the BBC out to Afghanistan, where Mitcorp Systems Manager, Stuart Currie, estimated that a two to three man team could bolt it all together in a few&nbspdays.&nbsp “We wired it up to the last nut and bolt and tested it fully,” he explains. “Every aspect was tested, even the feeds to the wall boxes, and we undertook as much as we could here in the UK to make sure that the assembly team could complete the job in as short a time as possible. We even put cable termination panels on all the equipment racks so that they could just plug them straight in.”Ali Shah, BBC World Service Technology Manager, said ”The testing that Mitcorp and the BBC team completed in the UK gave the BBC the confidence to deploy the system to Afghanistan.&nbsp The on site install went smoothly and this is a testament to the hard work put in by CVP-Mitcorp and the BBC back in the UK and the close working relationship between the teams.&nbsp Working with Stuart and his team was a pleasure.”

Incorporating an innovative, low profile shoulder mounted design, the 1/3” AG-HPX301E P2 HD camcorder offers the flexibility of interchangeable lens but comes standard with a 17x HD Fujinon lens. <BR><BR>The AG-HPX301E imager incorporates advanced 1/3” 2.2-megapixel 3-MOS technology to acquire full native resolution HD images. With a redesigned optical block and a high-precision prism bonding technology, these advanced 3-MOS imagers provide exceptional image quality while minimizing any flare and chromatic aberration. A new 20-bit digital signal processor (DSP) also enhances the HPX301E’s image performance. The solid-state 1/3” HPX301E offers the security of a five-year warranty program (1 year + 4 additional years with registration), ultimate quality and flexibility in an affordable, full-size HD camcorder.<BR><BR>Delivering the impressive quality of AVC-Intra 100 and AVC-Intra 50, the HPX301E also records individual frame images in 100Mbps DVCPRO HD and in standard definition in DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV, which provides faster workflow and less degradation in multigenerational rendering. <BR><BR>The AVC-Intra 100 and 50 codecs let you record in a choice of HD video formats like Pal and NTSC frequencies. Moreover, it records also in SD frequencies in interlinear and progressive mode. The camera also supports 1080/23.98PsF output (via HD-SDI) for use in high-end movie production. The output of the camera can be set for down conversion or cross-conversion with letterbox, 4:3 crop or squeeze.<BR><BR>The HPX301E’s interchangeable lens design gives video pros the flexibility to utilize a wide range of broadcast and production HD lenses. The camera is equipped with numerous popular features including Chromatic Aberration Compensation (CAC) to maximize lens performance, built-in scan reverse for use with film lenses, a Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) function to help compensate for wide variations in lighting, a waveform and vector scope display, and two focus assist functions – a picture expanding function and a focus bar. <BR><BR>For added creative flexibility, the HPX301E also has variable frame rate functions for creating fast and slow motion effects. In 720p mode, a user can choose between 20 variable frame steps between 12p and 60p. Because the HPX301E records images at the frame rate set in the camera, users can preview the speed effect right on the spot, without using a frame rate converter. When working with the camera’s advanced 1080/480 24pA mode, users have the option of using 2:3:3:2 pull down, which allows most nonlinear editing systems to easily extract 24 frames on ingest. <BR><BR>Equipped with two P2 card slots and new 64GB P2 cards, the HPX301E offers recording capacity that exceeds that of tape based camcorders. The HPX301E offers all the benefits of a faster, file-based P2 HD workflow including recording features like instant recording startup, clip thumbnail view for immediate access to video content on all cards, and a host of time-saving recording modes including continuous recording, card slot selection, hot swapping, loop, pre-record (three seconds in HD and seven seconds in SD), one-shot and interval recording. The camera also features an SD memory card slot for saving or loading scene files and user settings, or proxy data (optional AJ-YAX800G Proxy board required). <BR><BR>The HPX301E has advanced gamma functions offering six shooting scenarios, including the popular Cine-Like Gamma modes found on Panasonic’s popular VariCam camera, which gives recordings the characteristic warm tone of film recordings. A scene file dial on the side of the camera provides quick access to six pre-loaded settings; the dial can also be programmed with user-defined settings.<BR><BR>The camera’s interfaces include two SDI outputs (switchable between HD/SD-SDI output), video output (down-converted SD video only), IEEE 1394, USB 2.0 interface compatible with host mode, time code input/output (with built-in SMPTE time code generator/reader). Additional features include, Genlock input, 4-position ND optical filter controls, DC power input, color bar switch, three XLR audio jacks (one in the front, two on the rear), wireless microphone slot (2-channel UniSlot wireless receiver compatible) and programmable user buttons. <BR><BR>The HPX301E can also be used as a studio camera.
